The unsuccessful writer Marcello, who, accompanied by a photographer, works for a gossip newspaper, immerses completely in “the sweet life” of fashionable, cinematic, intellectual Rome. Among the many faces whom he meets in the buzz along Via Veneto – the street of the beau monde, are: Steiner – a writer in crisis who later commits suicide; the whimsical American movie star Sylvia and a bunch of aristocrats who drag Marcello into an unbridled revelry. In the morning after the night orgy, exhausted and dizzy, the participants discover the body of a sea monster on the beach…

LaDolcevitadescribes The Eternal City as Babylon before Christ – charming and repulsive at the same time. After the ecclesiastical and political scandals it stirs up, the film becomes a cult classic. It makes internationally popular the word paparazzo and turns Anita Ekberg’s sensual bathing in Fontana di Trevi into one of the most iconic scenes in world cinema.
