After leaving Cahiers du cinéma, the young Godard decided that making films was the best form of film criticism. He convinced producer Boregar to finance a low-budget production, creating with Truffaut a film about a gangster couple – Breathless, which would become one of the masterpieces of world cinema. Nouvelle Vaguedoes not pay homage, but continues a tradition: to think with the camera, to trust chance, and to believe that cinema can be alive, breathing, unfinished. This is a film about rebellion against form, about the search for meaning and the beauty of imperfection – where Godard meets Linklater, and the past and present talk like old friends.
