An American ambassador, two of his high-ranking friends - all three drug traffickers - and their wives try to organize a friendly dinner. But with each attempt, an incident occurs (an unfortunate death, military maneuvers, an arrest, a gangster invasion...) that causes the event to be postponed until the next day.
This comedy, based on the repetition of the same situation and constantly moving from reality to nightmare, finally to the fuss of the frustrated characters on a deserted highway, is a masterpiece of black humour. Mixing all film genres, Bunuel also outlines the absurdity of bourgeois society thanks to his impeccable actors.
