The book “Satyricon”was written by Petronius in 1st century AD. Rome at the time of Nero. Two young men – Ascyltos and Encolpius – are in love with a third – Giton. Ascyltos steals him from Encolpius and sells him to Vernacius, author of crappy pantomimes. Encolpius manages to get back Giton who, however, reveals to him that he is in fact in love with Ascyltos. Encolpius contemplates suicide but an earthquake ruins the palace where he is at the moment. Saved by a miracle, Encolpius meets the old poet Eumolpus who takes him to Trimalchio – a wealthy freedman. At the feast in his villa the old poet is cruelly beaten up. Encolpius is sold into slavery. On a pirate ship he meets again Giton and Ascyltos. The trio’s adventures continue. Encolpius becomes impotent and seeks to cure himself with the sacred fire of Oenothea. He also fights with the Minotaur…

While Petronius criticizes the decline of his time with his merciless witty irony, Fellini rather immerses in dreamlike visions marked by Eros and Thanatos.
