The film tells the story of a little-known period in the life of Miguel de Cervantes. The action takes place in 1575, when the young soldier Cervantes, wounded in a naval campaign, is captured by Algerian corsairs and sold to the fearsome Hassan Baja. While waiting for his ransom to be paid, Cervantes finds solace in storytelling—his tales inspire hope in his fellow prisoners and gradually attract the attention of even his captor.
