In 1977, Brazil is in the throes of military dictatorship. Marcelo, a former university professor, is pressured by the authorities who want to appropriate his scientific discoveries. Forced to leave his home, he hides amid the chaos of a city where music plays and carnival rages at night, while fear and repression reign during the day. Paranoia grows, allies and enemies blur, and Marcelo searches for a way to survive while struggling with his own guilt and powerlessness.

Kleber Mendonça Filho turns The Secret Agent into more than a political thriller: it is a cinematic meditation on fear, guilt and illusions. The Cannes Film Festival praised the exceptional performance of Wagner Moura, whose restraint and hidden pain lend human depth to the chaos around him.
