Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, West Side Story is a modern look at an age-old masterpiece. Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein’s musical adaptation took Broadway by storm in 1957, before moviegoers and the academy embraced it wholeheartedly in 1961. West Side Story is a magnificent, powerful and stunning cinematic achievement.

Prior to West Side Story the majority of musicals had taken place in a realm outside reality. This modernization of “Romeo and Juliet” infused the genre with a tangible reminder of the existing world – the grittiness of the street. Wise and Robbins fashioned a story that depicted the then current racial friction between white Americans and Puerto Ricans, choosing to shoot the film on the actual site of the tension, New York City.

It’s uncanny just how well a story rooted in prevailing cultural clashes lends itself to highly stylized Hollywood musicals. The language of adolescent posing and confrontation is readily expressed through choreography. The power of dance is dependеnt upon the music that drives it. And West Side Story’s score is incontestably phenomenal cross between symphony and modern jazz.
