In December 1981, Poland was on the brink of a major social upheaval. English teacher Dr. Joan Andrews arrived in Warsaw to give a lecture. On December 13, martial law is imposed and the country is suddenly transformed: cities are blockaded, streets are controlled by police and soldiers, and citizens are deprived of their normal freedoms. When she witnesses the secret services killing a student, Joan becomes a target. As tensions rise, she undergoes an internal transformation—from an academic observer, she becomes someone who cannot remain an indifferent witness.

Lesley Manville's remarkable performance is at the heart of this gripping political thriller, which sheds light on one of the most tense periods of totalitarianism.
