Beneath the seemingly simple plot—three actresses, Liz, Marianne, and Gunilla, go on tour with the play Lysistrata—lies a deeply philosophical reflection on the role of women in a male-dominated society and the invisible boundaries that restrict their lives, choices, and voices.
Swedish director Mai Zetterling’s film is one of the most powerful and underrated works of feminist cinema from the second half of the 20th century. Today, it is considered a masterpiece ahead of its time, impressing with its in-depth analysis of the role of women in a male-dominated society.
