Arthur and Franz meet Odile in an English class. Odile works as a housekeeper for an elderly lady in exchange for free accommodation. The latter often welcomes a mysterious Eastern diplomat to her villa on the banks of the Marne river and hides huge stacks of banknotes there. The two young men persuade Odile to help them seize this treasure. But the operation goes wrong...
The youths, too keen on crime tv shows and criminal headlines, undertake (unsuccessfully) a planned robbery. But Godard doesn't turn the plot into a sociological parabola or an attempt at parody. Tragicomic fiction aims above all to gain insight into the plight of characters who experience themselves as eccentric destroyers of convention in everyday life and on the screen, radiating their beliefs as a continuous game and reaching sometimes tragic ends. Here, the interpretation, spontaneity, humour, and credulous seriousness of the three actors prevail like in no other Godard film.
One of Godard's truly cult films; as a tribute to it, the cinephile Tarantino named similarly his production company, A Band Apart.
